Since 2001, 23 December is celebrated as Kisan Diwas honouring the birth anniversary of India’s 5th Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh.

Chaudhary Charan Singh was the PM for just over five months (July 1979 – January 1980). In his term as the Prime Minister, he never faced Lok Sabha. Singh introduced various new reforms for the betterment of the farmers such as Agricultural Produce Market Bill and Zamindari Abolition Act. He was a believer of Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan of Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.

At the age of 85, India lost him to a stroke on 29 May 1987.

On December 23, various programs and seminars are organized across the country for farmers. The day is also a public holiday in Uttar Pradesh. On this day leaders visi Kisan Ghat, the memorial site of Chaudhary Charan Singh.
