Kanishak Kataria, a B.Tech graduate from IIT Bombay, has topped the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil services examination whose results were declared on Friday, April 5. Kataria hails from Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Kanishak Kataria is a Data Scientist for a firm in Bengaluru and is the son of an IAS (Indian Administrative Services) officer. Kanishak pursued Computer Science engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay after topping the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced in Schedule Caste (SC) category in 2010. Since class 9th Kanishak was undergoing coaching for the engineering entrance, JEE, from Resonance institute in Kota, Rajashtan. 

Talking about the result Kanishak said, “It’s a very surprising moment. I never expected to get the 1st rank. I thank my parents, sister & my girlfriend for the help & moral support. People will expect me to be a good administrator & that’s exactly my intention.” Kanishak a football enthusiast, before jumping into preparations for the exams was working in a South Korea firm as a Software Development Engineer.

Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) has declared the result of Civil Services Examination, 2018 on its official website on Friday, April 5, 2019. Civil Services Exam 2018 mains examination was conducted between September 28 and October 7, 2018. While the interview stage was conducted in the month of February and March.

UPSC statement said a total of 759 candidates (577 men and 182 women) have been recommended by the Commission for appointment to various central services such as IAS, IPS, IRS and IFS.

“Based on the results of the written part of Civil Services Examination, 2018 held by the Union Public Service Commission in September-October, 2018 and the interviews for Personality Test held in February-March, 2019, following is the list, in order of merit, of candidates who have been recommended for appointment to: (i) Indian Administrative Service, (ii) Indian Foreign Service, (iii) Indian Police Service, (iv) Central Services, Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’,” The official notification reads.
