Kochadhaman Assembly Constituency 2025: Kochadhaman is a state Assembly constituency defined within Kishanganj district of Bihar. The 2008 delimitation demarcated it as the 55th constituency numbered after Kochadhaman community development block and gram panchayats namely Belwa, Gachhpara, Chakla, Mehangaon, Daula, and Pichhla of the Kishanganj block.
Voters and Local Issues
The constituency is open, not reserved, but the voter makeup is what sets it apart. Over 72% of the electorate are Muslims, so identity politics and community representation become vital during elections. The place is a settlement of mixed Urdu-Bengali culture because of the Seemanchal influence and its closeness to West Bengal.
Though people of different identities suffer from the same local issues. Seasonal flooding, which affects people’s lives and agriculture, is the main problem. Along with other issues such as bad roads, broken embankments, and the generally poor state of infrastructure, all have become recurring complaints. Despite people mainly relying on agriculture for their livelihoods, the lack of industries has left the majority of the region’s youth with no other options but to take up farming.
Kochadhaman Assembly Constituency 2025: Recently Political History
Kochadhaman has been a place of political changes over the last 10 years. Akhtarul Iman won a seat on an RJD ticket in the 2010 assembly election; however, Mujahid Alam of JD(U) took the seat during the 2014 by-election and further consolidated it in 2015. Conversely, 2020 turned out to be the year of a complete change of direction as Muhammad Izhar Asfi of AIMIM won the seat by over 36,000 votes defeating Mujahid Alam.
For AIMIM, this win was a telltale sign of a very fast growing influence in Seemanchal politics. Nevertheless, by June 2022 Asfi along with three other AIMIM MLAs had joined the RJD thereby changing the political scenario once more.
Election Numbers (2010–2020)
Looking at electoral numbers from Kochadhaman provides an insight into the changes in voter sentiment over time. RJD’s Akhtarul Iman grabbed the winning ticket with about 37,000 votes in 2010, so to speak, creating an RJD stronghold.
Meanwhile, Mujahid Alam of JD(U) raked in almost 56,000 votes whereas AIMIM’s Akhtarul Iman could only manage about 37,000 votes much behind, reflecting the then prevalent dominance of JD(U). The 2020 election turned things upside down drastically.
Izhar Asfi of AIMIM got close to 80,000 votes accounting for nearly half of the total votes cast while Mubarak Alam of managed around 44,000. The difference in votes, over 36,000, was one of the biggest in the constituency and evidenced a consolidated drift to AIMIM’s side. RJD that used to be at the forefront in the area fell to third place with roughly 26,000 votes.
