Kolkata Traffic Restrictions: Kolkata is putting heavy traffic controls in place on Saturday, May 9, because Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground. The event is drawing top leaders too, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states. Police have said the city is preparing for large security arrangements around the venue and the main routes leading to it.

The main traffic restrictions will run from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM. During this time, the entry and movement of goods vehicles inside Kolkata Police limits will be restricted. At the same time, vehicles carrying essential supplies will still be allowed. That includes items such as vegetables, medicines, milk and oxygen supplies, and in the police notice also LPG cylinders, CNG, petroleum products, fruits and fish.

Roads with Tight Movement

Police have warned that traffic will be restricted on several important roads near the ceremony area. These include Esplanade Ramp, K.P. Road, Hospital Road, Lovers Lane, Casuarina Avenue and Queensway. The restrictions can be applied in phases and may change depending on the Prime Minister’s convoy movement and the crowd situation. Police also said these steps may be taken “as and when necessary”.

The no-parking zone is also wide. Parking is banned near Victoria Memorial Hall and on stretches of AJC Bose Road, Khidirpore Road, Hospital Road, Queensway, Cathedral Road, Casuarina Avenue and Lovers Lane. In some reports, tram services and other vehicle movement on linked routes may also be paused or diverted for a while if needed.

What the Commuters should do?

Kolkata Police has asked people to plan their travel early, avoid the affected roads and keep checking traffic updates through the day. The idea is to keep the VVIP convoy moving smoothly and to reduce congestion around the ceremony site. Police said the restrictions will stay in force until evening and may last longer if the situation needs it.
