Who Is West Bengal’s New CM Suvendu Adhikari? BJP’s Bengal Face Makes History

West Bengal’s New CM Suvendu Adhikari: In a historic political shift in West Bengal, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the state’s next Chief Minister after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s massive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. Widely known as the BJP’s “giant killer,” Adhikari rose to national prominence after defeating longtime rival Mamata Banerjee in a high-stakes electoral battle that reshaped Bengal politics.

West Bengal’s New CM Suvendu Adhikari

The BJP officially announced Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of its legislative party during a crucial meeting held in Kolkata on Friday. The meeting was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders. Adhikari is expected to take oath as the first BJP Chief Minister in West Bengal’s history on May 9, 2026.

The development marks the end of over a decade of Trinamool Congress rule under Mamata Banerjee and signals a dramatic political transformation in the state.

Why Is Suvendu Adhikari Called The ‘Giant Killer’?

Suvendu Adhikari earned the “giant killer” tag after defeating Mamata Banerjee in one of Bengal’s most symbolic electoral contests. His victory in Bhabanipur during the 2026 elections further cemented his reputation as BJP’s strongest face in the state.

Political analysts view Adhikari as the architect of BJP’s Bengal breakthrough because he uses aggressive campaigning methods together with his ability to build local organizations and his complete knowledge of Trinamool Congress operations which he learned when he worked as a close aide to Mamata Banerjee.

From TMC Strongman To BJP’s Bengal Face

Suvendu Adhikari became a member of the BJP in 2020 after he had established himself as a major political force within the Trinamool Congress while holding multiple ministerial positions in the Bengal government which included Transportation and Environmental duties. He was also a Member of Parliament from Tamluk and later served as Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Adhikari was born in Purba Medinipur district 1970 to a family with many political connections. His father, Sisir Adhikari, was also an experienced parliamentarian.

His Political Journey

Adhikari first emerged as a major political figure during the anti-land acquisition movement in Nandigram, which became a turning point in Bengal politics and helped the Trinamool Congress rise against the Left Front government. Years later, his switch to the BJP became one of the biggest political setbacks for the TMC.

He became the most active visible leader for the BJP in Bengal because he started to lead various campaigns about governance and Hindutva politics and anti-corruption storytelling.

The BJP victory has changed Bengal politics but Suvendu Adhikari now faces problems because political unrest and post-election violence have been reported from multiple districts. The killing of Adhikari’s close aide Chandranath Rath led to escalating tensions which resulted in political leaders across the state reacting to the situation.
