Labour and Agriculture Day 2023: Labour and Agriculture Day is celebrated annually on May 1 in Haiti. It is a day to commemorate and express gratitude for everything farmers do to ensure the availability of fresh food. It is sometimes difficult to remember how privileged we are to have access to crops, and when we see our food packaged in supermarkets, we feel disconnected from its origins. On Labour and Agriculture Day, we honour the farmers who provide our food.

HISTORY OF LABOUR AND AGRICULTURE DAY

Since humans gained the intelligence to cultivate sustenance, farming and agriculture have played a crucial role in ensuring our survival. The practise of cultivation dates back to the Neolithic period. According to our knowledge, the Sumerians, who had an agricultural labour force, were the first to engage in large-scale agriculture. They also constructed agricultural irrigation systems and adhered to a strict harvesting schedule throughout the year.

Labour and Agriculture Day, a holiday honouring the achievements of labourers, is celebrated annually in the Republic of Haiti. The holiday is known as Labour Day or May Day in other countries. It began with the eight-hour day movement, which advocated for eight hours of work, eight hours of recreation, and eight hours of leisure.

In the 1800s, in order to earn a living, many workers were required to work more than 12 hours a day, seven days a week. This led to the formation of labour unions, which organised strikes to improve working conditions. Several movements, including the Haymarket affair on May 4, 1886, became violent. When a bomb was hurled at police, a peaceful labour rally advocating for an eight-hour workday near Chicago’s Haymarket Square quickly degenerated into a riot. At least seven police officers and four civilians were slain, as well as a large number of others. The Haymarket incident is widely regarded as Labour Day’s origin.
