Learn How to Calculate Your Child and Dependent Care Credit with a Helpful Calculator: The Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC) is essential for parents with child care costs. This benefit, unlike the child tax credit, helps families with disabled or under-13-year-old dependents.

You must meet specific criteria to claim the CDCTC on your tax return. To work or actively pursue job, you must earn income and pay for dependent care during the tax year.

The CDCTC is a non-refundable credit, thus its tax-saving potential must be acknowledged. Corporations can only refund what is needed to pay taxes.

How one can determine the exact amount received.

The credit is assessed at 20–35% of qualified expenditures, with a maximum of $3,000 for one qualifying dependant and $6,000 for two or more. This allows a $2,100 credit for two or more dependents and $1,050 for one. The extent of expenditure deductions depends on adjusted gross income.

Income does not limit CDCTC eligibility, but it reduces the amount of qualifying expenses. Over $43,000 earners can deduct 20% of expenses.

Qualified dependents must be claimed on tax returns and fit one of several categories. This includes a child under 13, a spouse or dependent who is physically or mentally incapable of self-care and lives with you for more than half the year, or a parent or other dependent who meets other requirements.

Exceptions apply to joint filers, dependents with earned income over $4,700, and those entitled to be claimed.
