Love Note Day 2023: History, Dates, Activities, and FAQs

Love Note Day 2023: Love Note Day is observed annually on September 26. On this day, you can channel your inner Victorian lover and send your partner warm, heartfelt love notes! National Boyfriend Day or Valentine’s Day are not required to make someone you care about feel special. It is an opportunity to express your deepest feelings by writing what they mean to you and sending them in a scented envelope or via email to your lover. If you are not usually the wordy romantic type, then take this day as an opportunity to be a little cheesy. Even a simple “I love you” can convey happiness and affection to your partner.

History of Love Note Day

Prior to the invention of email and social media, the earliest record of a love letter dates back approximately 5,000 years to an ancient Indian text called the “Bhagavata Purana.” It was sent by Princess Rukmini and delivered by her messenger to a king named Krishna.

In Ancient Egypt and Rome, the art of formal and informal (love) letter writing was a topic of great interest. Until the start of the 18th century, the love letter was taught as a skill. In the latter half of the 18th century, under the influence of the Romantics, literature, and writing underwent a significant shift, and the idea of teaching how to write love letters is questioned. Romantics believed that love letters should come from the heart. Its content should contain nothing artificial or fabricated.

Due to the numerous wars that separated lovers in the first half of the 20th century, the popularity of love letters persisted. Without the internet or mobile phones, the love letter was the only significant exchange and means of communication between distant lovers. In the second half of the 20th century, the internet and technology emerged, and the love letter began to be gradually replaced.

We have email, social media applications, and mobile phones to communicate with our loved ones in the 21st century. This indicates that the art of sending and receiving love letters has already begun to decline. The term “mail” now refers to email, not physical letters. The practice of writing and receiving love letters is not yet extinct. Many authors and romantics around the world continue to perpetuate this tradition. Although we do not know exactly who created Love Note Day, it appears to be an initiative to revive this forgotten medium.
