Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Tamil Nadu government to waive farm loans of all farmers in the state irrespective of their land holdings.

The court also ordered the government to ensure that no penal action is taken against farmers by officials.

Earlier, the Centre had sanctioned a drought-relief package of Rs 1,447.99 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to aid the relief of Tamil Nadu farmers.

Farmers from Tamil Nadu have been protesting at Jantar Mantar for more than 20 days demanding a drought relief package of Rs 40,000 crore from the Centre and farm loan waiver.

The farmers recently threatened to slit their throats if action isn’t taken in the drought-prone state.

After visiting the protest site, DMK working president MK Stalin  had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should waive off their loans as he promised in Uttar Pradesh during the recent Assembly election.
