Mahavir Jayanti 2024: Jains believe that Jainism is an eternal (sanatan) religion (dharma) with the tirthankaras overseeing every cycle of the Jain cosmology, and Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated by the community to commemorate the birthday of Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. Parasparopagraho Jvnm (the function of souls is to help each other) is the motto of Jainism, amkra mantra is the most common and basic prayer in Jainism, and Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated as one of the most auspicious festivals of the Jain community to observe peace, harmony, and to spread the teachings of Mahavira.
Mahavir Jayanti 2024: Significance
Mahavir was born in Kundalagrama, Bihar, on the thirteenth day of Chaitra or the thirteenth day of waxing moon in the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar. He was born to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala as their firstborn. Swetambar Jains believe he was born in 599 B.C., whereas Digambar Jains believe he was born in 615 B.C.
At the age of 30, Mahavir gave up his crown and all of his worldly possessions in pursuit of a spiritual path. He spent 12 years in exile as an ascetic, away from all worldly indulgences, and meditated and led an austere life for approximately 12 years prior to attaining ‘Kevala Jnana’ or omniscience. He was also known as Sage Vardhamana and preached nonviolence. (ahimsa).
Mahavir proclaimed ahimsa or nonviolence, satya (truth), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (chastity), and aparigraha (non-possession). (non-attachment). Indrabhuti Gautama, Mahavir’s chief disciple, compiled the teachings of Mahavir. His name was derived from his exceptional sensory control. Seeking truth and spiritual liberation, at the age of 72 he attained enlightenment (Nirvana).
Mahavir Jayanti 2023: Significance
On Mahavir Jayanti, a procession is held with an idol of Mahavir on a chariot, accompanied by religious hymns. On this day, Jains celebrate by performing acts of charity, reciting prayers, and observing fasts, as well as by visiting Jain temples, conducting mass prayers, and meditating.
The festivities include the consumption of satvik cuisine, which consists of freshly prepared vegetarian dishes prepared without onion or garlic. These two root vegetables are absent from Satvik diets, which are prepared with minimal damage to living creatures.
On Mahavir Jayanti, religious processions (rath yatra) are carried out. Jain temples are adorned with flags, and the impoverished and needy are given gifts. Donations are also made in an effort to prevent the slaughter of animals.
