Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate and sitting Member of Parliament (MP) from Meerut Lok Sabha constituency, Rajendra Agrawal will hope to make it three times in a row. Agrawal is pitted against Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance candidate Yakoob Qureshi and the Congress party’s Harendra Agrawal.
Qureshi rose to limelight in 2006 after he announced $11 million bounty head of a Danish cartoonist who drew cartoons showing disrespect to Islam. Harendra Agarwal, the Congress candidate, is the son of former Chief Minister Banarasi Das.
The Meerut constituency has about 2.5 lakh votes from the traders’ community and the grandold party would be hoping to get a great deal of these votes.
The Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh will take place across seven phases, with eight constituencies to go for elections in the first phase on April 11, as announced by the Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora on March 10.
The Election Commission of India announced that the general elections will begin on April 11, with the last phase taking place on May 19, the results is slated to be announced on May 23.
Uttar Pradesh has a total of 80 Lok Sabha constituencies.
Elections in the Meerut constituency will take place in the first phase of the General Elections 2019 on April 11.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Rajendra Agarwal registered a victory by more than 2 lakh votes. He polled 5,32,981 votes and registered a victory by more than 2 lakh votes.
