In a sudden turn of events, Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy passed away on Sunday afternoon.
As per the reports, 65-year-old Roy was admitted to the Medanta hospital in Gurugram on July 18 and was undergoing treatment for stomach-related problem since then.
On July 28, Roy took his last breath at about 2:50 PM.
Donkupar Roy’s political career
United Democratic Party (UDP) president Donkupar Roy, the key partner in the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, was elected as the assembly speaker in March 2018.
Roy, the longest serving legislator, secured 35 of the 56 votes.
Roy had been a member of the assembly since 1988 and represented Shella constituency in East Khasi Hills district, first as an independent and then as head of the UDP.
