June 1 marks the World Milk Day every year. This day aims towards celebrating the contributions of the dairy sector to sustainability, economic development, livelihoods, and nutrition.

The day also aims to draw importance to the nutritional value of milk and how the entire dairy industry thus contributes to the livelihood of billions around the world. It draws more attention to recognizing milk as global food.

Theme of World Milk Day

Last year, the theme of the World Milk Day this year is “Drink Milk: Today and Everyday.” It highlights the importance of this dairy product and how one should include it in their daily routine.

Earlier, the day was celebrated by holding marathons, family runs, farm visits, school activities, concerts, conferences, seminars along with a range of events. Some of the organizations contribute milk donations to schools, food banks, giving out milk bars and holding nutrition conferences.

History and Significance of Milk Day

World Milk Day was initially established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation in the year 2001.

The date was selected based on how the other countries were celebrating this day. Every year new countries join to celebrate this day and in the year 2018, over 586 events were held in 72 countries. Various campaigns are organized which highlight the importance of milk for the overall health of a person.

The day also raises awareness of dairy’s part in healthy diets, responsible food production and supporting livelihoods and communities. The events publicize the activities of milk industries around the world.

Also on this day, the International Dairy Federation also holds some promotional activities. The celebration of this day has impacted a large population to understand the reality of milk and important it is to include it in the diet program.
