The much-anticipated release of Amazon’s Mirzapur was seen by many as its direct face-off with Netflix’ Sacred Games, but we were left bored. Thanks to its predictability. Violence, cheating, and lack of creative innovativeness summarise Mihir Desai’s latest work.

Mirzapur, an Amazon Prime TV series released today, is a tale of a drug mafia with Kaleen Bhaiya(played by Pankaj Tripathi) as its leader and his son Munna, trying to become one. Mirzapur seems to be the crime capital of the region, the centre of power, whom everyone dreams of ruling over, but Alas! only if Kaleen Bhaiya’s steps were that easy to follow.

Filled with characters who murdered the plot with their dry humour, the series failed to make any impact whatsoever on the viewers. If even the Gangs of Wasseypur fame, Pankaj Tripathi can’t make Mirzapur a tolerable watch, it tells you how indigestible the humour must have been. It looks like a rather watered down version of Anurag Kashyap’s past works.

Amazon’s earlier shows such as Inside Edge and Breath flopped in comparison to Netflix’ listings. If they both were below par, Mirzapur has broken the records of mediocrity. It is yet to be seen if Prime can come up with a production that can challenge the prowess of Netflix, but for now, it seems like a distant dream.
