Mizoram State Day 2023: Date, History, Celebration, Facts about Mizos

Mizoram State Day 2023 is annually observed on February 20. It is both a national holiday and a bank holiday. On State Day, all educational institutions and government agencies will be closed. It marks Mizoram’s admission as a state on February 20, 1987.

HISTORY OF MIZORAM STATE DAY

Before Mizoram was constituted a state, this territory was inhabited by tribes from north-eastern India. However, the origins of the tribes remain rather obscure. During the Mongoloid wave, the tribes travelled from China to India, according to historical accounts. Some people claim that the tribes originated in China’s Shinlung or Chhinlung San, two regions located along the Yalung River. However, the plot becomes even more intricate!

Although they are now known as Mizos, the earliest immigrants were once known as Kukis. The second group of immigrants to India became known as ‘New Kukis,’ while the last were known as ‘Lushais.’ Several tribe raids occurred during the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Mizo Hills were proclaimed British territory in 1895. A declaration issued in 1935 designated the districts of Lushai Hills and Assam as an Excluded Area.

Due to the Mizos’ contempt for British rule, a political awakening was sparked. In response to the awakening, the first Mizo political party emerged. The Mizo Common People’s Union was founded on April 9, 1946; it was later renamed Mizo Union (MU). Although the party did bring about some change, the Mizos were never quite pleased with the outcome because the British continued to have a significant amount of influence. Only after the British departed India in 1947 were the Mizos liberated. How is the holiday observed?

The State Day is commemorated with pomp and circumstance by raising the National Flag at government buildings, commercial establishments, and private residences. At Aizawl’s Assam Rifles Ground, state-level events are organised. A yearly Independence Football Tournament is held to commemorate the event. Students execute cultural activities with considerable zeal in schools and colleges.

The Chief Minister hoists the national flag during the state-level ceremony, which is followed by an inspection of the guard of honour and a parade organised by the state’s police, paramilitary forces, cadets of NSS and NCC, Scouts, Guides, and Assam Rifles. Those who have survived as well as those who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of an independent state are honoured. Different categories of awards are given to excellent achievers in many disciplines.
