London: Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah celebrated on Monday after being chosen Player of the Year for 2017-18 by the United Kingdom’s Professional Footballers’ Association, an award cherished by athletes because it is decided by fellow players.

The 25-year-old received more votes that Kevin de Bruyne, Leroy Sané and David Silva of English Premier League (EPL) champion Manchester City, Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur and David de Gea of Manchester United, reports Efe.

“Truly honoured by this prize which was awarded to me by colleagues — very special day,” Salah said on his Twitter account.

Salah made a remarkable debut this season at Liverpool scoring 41 goals in 46 appearances for his club, a feat that marked him out from his rivals for the prize which is awarded by votes by PFA members from 92 EPL and Football League clubs at a ceremony in London.

“Congratulations to @LFC’s Mo Salah, crowned the Men’s PFA Players Player-of-the-Year,” the association said.

“I feel great. I work hard and I’m very happy to win it,” Salah said after collecting the award.

“My personal thing is to win something with the team. I always think about the team, I don’t think about myself, so the most important thing for me is to win something with the team,” he added.

“We are very close now, in the (Champions League) semi-final, so hopefully we’re going to win it.”

The Egypt forward is the seventh Liverpool player to take the PFA accolade which has also been given to Luis Suarez (2013-14), Steven Gerrard (2005-06), John Barnes (1987-88), Ian Rush (1983-84), Kenny Dalglish (1982-83) and Terry McDermott (1979-80).

“The team helped me a lot, the way we play, they help me, they pass me the ball a lot,” Salah said.
