Muharram 2025 Date: Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, has begun in India on Friday, June 27, 2025. The crescent moon was seen on June 26, and the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee confirmed the moon sighting. This started the Islamic New Year, which is called the Hijri New Year.
The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, will fall on Sunday, July 6, 2025. That day is a gazetted holiday in India. Because of this, all government offices, schools, banks, and stock markets like BSE and NSE will stay closed on that day.

Why Muharram is so Important in Islam?
Muslims across the world give great respect to the month of Muharram. It is the second holiest month after Ramadan. Both Shia and Sunni Muslims treat this month with deep faith and seriousness. For Shia Muslims, it is a time of mourning. They remember Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who gave his life for truth and justice. He was killed in the Battle of Karbala in the year 680 AD. His bravery and sacrifice are remembered every year during Muharram, especially on the day of Ashura.
Sunni Muslims also see this month as very special. They keep fasts, offer prayers, and do charity, especially on Ashura. Many believe that big events happened on this day in history. One of them is when Prophet Moses and his people were saved as the Red Sea parted.
In India, Muharram is observed with strong devotion. Shia Muslims take part in majlis, where they listen to stories about Karbala. They also walk in processions and recite poems of grief called marsiyas. Some people even do self-flagellation as a way to show their sorrow and to stand with Imam Hussain’s pain. On the other hand, Sunni Muslims keep fasts and offer extra prayers to mark this important day.

Every year, large crowds gather during Muharram, so Indian states increase safety measures. This year, the police are on high alert in several places, especially in Uttar Pradesh. In Sambhal district alone, the police have placed more than 900 people under preventive watch.

Police officers are making sure that everything goes smoothly and peacefully. DGP Rajeev Krishna has given clear instructions to deny any new processions or routes that are not already allowed. He also said that no one should display weapons. He added that strict CCTV and drone checking will be done to keep everything under control and make sure there is peace between communities.
