Mumbai: Cracks appears on Matunga bridge, BMC declares it safe

The safety of the commuters is being questioned following the incident of over-bridge collapsed near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Now, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has found a wide crack on the foot overbridge that connects Matunga and Matunga station during the inspection of the bridge in the city.

However, the BMC officials have said that the bridge is kept under observation for the next eight days and the officials have also claimed that the bridge has a minor crack and is safe for the commuters.

In a study conducted by the government recently, the bridge has been listed under the unsafe bridges of Mumbai.

A commuter told that whenever a heavy vehicle passes, the bridge used to vibrates, we all get scared as if it is an earthquake. Meanwhile, another commuter added that there are cracks in the bridge and this bridge should be shut for the common passengers.

The commuters demanded that the government should find an alternative as the lives of thousands is on risk. They also said that 60-70 per cent of the Matunga’s population commutes through this way, so if there are cracks it should be repaired as soon as possible.

After the recent incident if the bridge collapse, the residents are scared to risk their lives. And the government authorities are not seen repairing the unsafe bridges that are ageing.

Elphinstone Road stations stampede claimed the lives of over 20 innocent civilians. Meanwhile, the current approach of the authorities is to get the foot overbridges inspected once every year and commission a contractor to carry out repairs of the issues.
