A major fire engulfed an oil tank farm of the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) situated on the Butcher Island off the east coast of Mumbai on Friday evening. The authorities are suspecting that it was caused by a lightning strike.

The fire started around 5 pm when the city and its neighboring areas witnessed thundershowers, but no causality has been reported, officials said. “The fire is contained to one tank farm owned by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). It is under control, but firefighting is on”.

Even after 36 hours, efforts are still underway to douse the fire.

The island, which is located close to the Elephanta Island in Thane, has an oil terminal used by the port authorities, where crude oil is stored in oil containers.

However, no casualties have been reported so far.
