Mumbai: Man arrested for driving autorickshaw on Virar Railway Station platform to help woman in labor

It’s not necessary that kindness will always take you a long way in life sometimes it can also land you in jail. This is what happened with an autorickshaw driver who was operating near the Virar railway station drove his vehicle on to the platform to help a woman who was undergoing premature labor.

Despite his kindness, he was later arrested by the railway protection force (RPF)

According to a national daily, the autorickshaw driver identified as Sagar Kamlakar Gawad (34) who is a resident of Dongarpada in Virar (west). Although he was produced before the railway court and released on bail on Monday.

The woman who was seven-month pregnant was traveling with her husband in the compartment reserved for a disabled person on Sunday morning. The train, however, was halted at the station due to delay in service caused by heavy rainfall.

The woman developed labor pain and her husband panicked and rushed out of the compartment to ask for help. Gawad had parked his vehicle in the western railway allotted space. When the man approached him and told about the situation, he then brought his auto on the platform all the way till the coach where the woman was seated.

After picking them up, the auto driver rushed them to the nearby hospital where the woman delivered the premature baby.

Police said “Even though Gawad acted with good intentions, he has violated the rules. Driving on the platform was risky, as it could have injured commuters.”

Post the incident, the auto driver was charged under section 154 and 159 by the railway act, 1989.
