Many museums were founded during the Age of Enlightenment to preserve historical artefacts that advanced humanity. Universities founded the British Museum and Ashmolean Museum in Europe. Later, several US museums with international collections opened. Many items in European and American exhibitions come from countries other than the museums, causing ownership disputes.
