Myanmar Armed Forces Day 2023: Myanmar Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on March 27. Locally known as “Tatmadaw Nay,” it commemorates the Myanmarese who stood up against the Japanese during World War II. Myanmar’s Armed Forces Day commemorates the army’s 1945 resistance to the Japanese occupation of the nation. The event is celebrated annually in Myanmar’s capital city, Naypyidaw, with a variety of festivities, the most prominent of which is a military parade and demonstrations by Myanmar’s armed forces.

HISTORY OF MYANMAR ARMED FORCES DAY

Myanmar (previously known as Burma) was brought under British administration in 1886, at which time the country was renamed Myanmar. Almost from the commencement of colonization, there was a strong feeling of hostility towards British rule. During World War II, many Burmese believed that the rise of Japan presented them with an opportunity to attain independence from the United Kingdom. Aung San was a leading figure in the independence movement, but he was compelled to flee the country and settle in China.

As a result of his belief that the Japanese would establish Burma as an independent nation if he assisted them in expelling the British, he established a cooperative relationship with them.
When Japan invaded Myanmar in 1942, Burmese nationalists supported it. Ultimately, Aung San realised that the Japanese had no intention of granting Burma independence, and on March 23, 1945, he led the Burmese army in a rebellion against the Japanese, which assisted the Allies in removing the Japanese forces from the area.

It should come as no surprise that the most important event on this day is an enormous military parade in Naypyidaw, the administrative capital of Myanmar. Originally known as Resistance Day, the ‘Tatmadaw’ altered the holiday’s name to Armed Forces Day.
