A dairy farmer of Belgaon in Nashik district of Maharashtra has started to ride a horse for his business to deliver milk from door to door. Kalu Gowardhan is a milkman who supplies home delivery of milk to his customers. Earlier Kalu used to ride a motorcycle to reach his customers’ homes in the surrounding villages.

However, the skyrocketing petrol price forced him to switch to ride a horse and dump motorcycle as the expenses of petrol had started to erode his profit margins. He ties a milk can to the back of the horse and goes from village to village, distributing milk.

According to Kalu, when he was using the bike, his monthly fuel bill was Rs 8,000. Now, he has to spend just Rs 4,000 per month on fodder for the animal. Thus, he is saving Rs 4,000 per month. “I also rent the horse for marriage processions and that is my extra income,” he says.
