National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day 2023: Date, History and Facts

National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day 2023: Every year on May 8, the Federal Emergency Management Agency observes National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day. This day is designated to raise awareness about animal disaster preparedness and how to care for them in dire circumstances. In an emergency, the safety and wellbeing of your creatures will depend heavily on your actions. Include your pets in your disaster preparedness preparations. On this day, learn numerous methods for keeping your beloved canines safe in the event of a natural disaster.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL ANIMAL DISASTER PREPAREDNESS DAY

2010 marked the establishment of National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Globally, natural disasters are becoming more frequent and destructive. Tornadoes are wreaking devastation in previously uncharted territory, hurricanes are making landfall, monsoon seasons are being renamed flood seasons, and earthquakes are occurring more frequently than ever before. Natural disasters have the same effect on animals as they do on humans. As animal carers and companions, as well as environmental stewards, we have the responsibility to reduce the impact of natural disasters on the animals we adore by recognising and mitigating the risks we all face. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the United States. Eventually, it was estimated that 600,000 animals, including dogs, birds, and cats, perished due to the catastrophe.

In response to natural disasters and emergencies, a number of organisations are established. The Executive Order of President Jimmy Carter, which went into effect on April 1, 1979, established FEMA. The “Executive Order” stipulated that FEMA would be responsible for both emergency management and civil defence.

The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act was approved by a bipartisan majority of Congress and signed into law in October 2006 in response to Hurricane Katrina. In 2010, FEMA initiated the National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day. Over the years, many more emergency response agencies have emerged.
