HISTORY OF NATIONAL ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY

The United States observes this day on May 19 annually. It serves to raise awareness and encourage HIV testing among individuals. The New York Times reported HIV for the first time in 1981. In New York and California, there was an outbreak of a rare form of cancer among gay males. Originally referred to as the “gay cancer,” Kaposi sarcoma was subsequently identified as the cause. Young men in otherwise good health were brought to emergency rooms with fevers, flu-like symptoms, and a rare form of pneumonia known as Pneumocystis. In just a few short years, a global pandemic killed millions of individuals.

By 2009, scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill had deciphered the entire HIV genome’s structure. This enabled scientists to develop more advanced HIV diagnostic tools and targeted treatments. This initiative resulted in the creation of integrase inhibitors. In the United States, these inhibitors are now used as first-line treatments.

The World Health Organisation and the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) declared in 2014 their intention to terminate the HIV pandemic by 2030. They intend to accomplish this by diagnosing 90 percent of HIV-positive individuals worldwide. They would administer HIV treatment in order to attain an undetectable viral load. Globally increasing rates of drug resistance and treatment failure, as well as dwindling contributions from donor nations, have posed obstacles for the programme.
