National Carolina Day 2024 History, FAQs, Dates, Activities, and Facts About Carolina

National Carolina Day 2024: National Carolina Day is observed annually on January 17 to honor the appellation Carolina and all those who have borne the name Carolina. It derives from the dialects of Spain, England, Italy, Portugal, Catalan, Sweden, and Germany and is predominantly feminine. The German meaning of the name Carolina is “beautiful” or “free.” In contrast, Carolina derives its name from the Latin word Carolus (Charles), which signifies “free man” or “freeholder.” The translation of Carolina into Spanish can also be “prettiest woman of the town” or “song of happiness or joy” from French.

The History of National Carolina Day

One of a considerable number of historical figures bearing the name Carolina is Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. The daughter of Charles William Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick, and Princess Augusta of Great Britain, she was born in 1768. In 1794, she entered into matrimony with her cousin George, who was previously unmarried to Maria Fitzherbert. Following her marriage to George in 1796, they divorced shortly after Princess Charlotte of Wales was born. Allegations involving her lover and an illegitimate child prompted the investigation into her private life. Despite this, the investigators were unable to establish the veracity of the allegations and consequently barred Caroline from seeing her daughter.

Caroline settled in Italy in 1814, where she hired Bartolomeo Pergami as a domestic; the two became intimate companions almost immediately. In 1817, she obtained word of her daughter’s stillbirth demise from a journeying courier. In 1820, following his coronation as king of the United Kingdom and Hanover, George demanded a divorce from Caroline, but she declined. Caroline enjoyed widespread support from the British, who despised George and sympathized with her. In 1820, George devised a plan to divorce her through the gathering of slack evidence and the introduction of the Pains and Penalties Bill to Parliament.
However, due to his lack of popularity and the cheers of the crowd regarding Caroline, the Liverpool ministry rescinded the measure. In 1821, Caroline was not permitted to attend George’s coronation. Three weeks after becoming ill in London in 1821 and passing away there, her funeral procession traveled via London to Braunschweig, where she was interred.
