HISTORY OF NATIONAL CLEAN BEAUTY DAY
National Clean Beauty Day may be celebrated for the first time on July 15, 2020, but its origins date back more than 15 years. Karen Behnke, a wellness expert and serial entrepreneur, spent years in the wellness industry establishing one of the first corporate wellness companies in the early 1980s; she also served on the Board of Directors of numerous fitness companies. As she worked to expand the fitness and nutrition-focused wellness industry, she devoted little attention to her own personal care products. At age 40, while pregnant with her first child and concerned about skin absorption, Karen developed a keen interest in the ingredients found in her cosmetic products. She was shocked to discover that both her costly department store and drug store purchases contained potentially harmful ingredients.
Karen intended to alter not only her personal care routine but also the entire cosmetics industry over the course of the following years. She collaborated with PhD chemists, physicians, microbiologists, and other experts for more than five years to solve the complex organic formulation challenges, create organic products with high efficacy, and refine Juice Beauty’s chemistry.
Juice Beauty was founded in 2005 (when Karen purchased the Juice Beauty trademark) with a mission to create the highest performing skincare products, but Karen swore to never use any ingredient that could be harmful to humans, animals, or the environment. Karen believed that formulating with an antioxidant- and vitamin-rich organic botanical juice base (rather than PEGS/petroleum derivatives or water) and combining with potent skincare ingredients would produce superior results compared to conventional or natural products. Multiple clinical exams confirmed her accuracy.
