Every year on July 1, National Doctors’ Day is observed in India. It aims to recognize the contributions of medics in the lives of individuals and communities. The day showcases the efforts and work of doctors as a society towards maintaining a healthy generation.

National Doctors’ Day in India is observed in the memory of legendary physician and the second chief minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy who was born on July 1, 1882.

This day is marked by health organizations where the doctors and nurses are honored for their work. Dr. Bidhan’s birth and death anniversary fall on the same day. The day will also witness several events at the hospital and medical colleges honoring doctors and the profession.

Doctor Roy was honored with country’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on Feb 4, 1961. The day is observed on July 1 to pay tributes to doctors who strive constantly to saves lives. The day also highlights the value of doctors in people’s lives.

The day was established by the central government in 1991 to be recognized and observed every year on July 1 to pay honor to Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.

Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was also a well-known freedom fighter. He is considered as the great architect of West Bengal and a member of Brahmo Samaj. He was the alumni of the University of Calcutta and his memory the union government had instituted an award.

He is known for playing an instrumental role in the establishment of Indian Medical Association (IMA) and also in the establishment of the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 1928.
