National High Five Day 2023: Up top! On April 20, be sure to give a “high five” to everyone you meet, as it is National High Five Day.
How did everything begin? It depends who you ask. We will use the baseball incident from 1977 in which Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke of the Dodgers gave each other a high five in celebration. L.A. was the first team in history to have four batters with at least 30 home runs in a single season after Baker’s home run.
Today, it is used globally to signify “Congratulations!” or “Great job!” We are still quite sentimental about the “low five,” which may have originated in the 1920s.

FOUR FACTS REGARDING THE “LOW FIVE”
The low five is the “too slow” counterpart to the high five.
The slapper misses because the rhyme begins “Up high, down low” and the hand is swiftly removed, causing him to miss. Too sluggish!
The first film appearance occurred in “The Principal”
In the 1987 film “The Principal,” James Belushi played the principal, who prevents Jacob Vargas from giving him a low five by grabbing his hand.
It is also performed by apes.
In the concluding scene of the 2014 film “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” two apes give the “too slow” version of the low five.
The best five?
According to some, the low five is the hipper cousin of the high five.

Did you know the high five is an international greeting? People on every continent perform this action! Craig Lewis, in truth, quit his job to high-five the entire world! He visited 36 nations and high-fived his way through them all!

Similar to the Ice Bucket Challenge, the High Five Challenge raises funds for children affected by chronic illness. The funds are used to fund their participation in arts and athletics programmes.
