National Newspaper Columnists Day 2023: History, activities, facts and celebrations

National Newspaper Columnists Day 2023: National Newspaper Columnists’ Day is celebrated annually on April 18. This event seeks to recognise the contributions of columnists. A columnist is a writer who publishes works in a series, typically offering commentary and opinions on current events or topics such as love, relationships, and vocations.

The various personalities of columnists are reflected in their writing. Some columnists use humour or satire to lighten the atmosphere or to play a role. Others provide alternative perspectives and research-based concrete facts. Regardless of their demeanour or writing style, the columnists’ labour connects them to the public.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL NEWSPAPER COLUMNISTS DAY

National Newspaper Columnists’ Day was established in 1977 by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. It was founded on April 18, 1945, in remembrance of the day columnist Ernie Pyle was slain during World War II. He was an American journalist and war correspondent who won the Pulitzer Prize and was best known for his accounts about American soldiers during World War II.

From 1935 to 1941, he was a roving correspondent for the Scripps-Howard newspaper syndicate covering human-interest stories. This earned him widespread acclaim for his straightforward accounts of common North Americans. When the United States entered World War II, he lent the same distinct, folksy style of his human-interest tales to his wartime reports from the European and Pacific theatres. In 1944, Pyle was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his first-person newspaper accounts of ‘dogface’ infantry personnel. During the Battle of Okinawa, he was slain by enemy fire on Iejima, Japan.

The purpose of this day is to recognise the risky work that journalists undertake to inform the public. They are also responsible for shaping public opinion, holding those in authority accountable, and bringing essential stories to light. The day is particularly devoted to correspondents and columnists worldwide. The sole purpose of their hazardous work is to uncover the truth for the greater good of society.
