National North Carolina Day 2023: National North Carolina Day is on September 28 and we are keen that every resident of North Carolina converts it into a day to remember. North Carolina is just as powerful and prosperous as Florida and California, despite having a lower population density. Did you know that North Carolina is the birthplace of many globally successful retail chains, including Pepsi and Krispy Kreme? The University of North Carolina is the oldest public institution of higher education in the United States. It is time to exult in North Carolina’s accomplishments.

The History of North Carolina Day

A state with numerous accomplishments, such as generating the most Nobel laureates in the United States, being the site of the Wright brothers’ first flight test, and joining the Union as the 12th state, deserves recognition. Therefore, in the early 20th century, a proposition was made in North Carolina’s public schools to designate a day that would “awaken proper pride in the state’s history.”

The recommendation was also intended to reduce illiteracy in North Carolina by promoting the free public education system. After the Civil War, illiteracy became widespread due to a lack of interest in levying taxes to enhance education. Additionally, state officials in North Carolina established a Literary and Historical Association to promote cultural interests among the unaffiliated.

Each year, schools distributed booklets to students detailing a distinct aspect of North Carolina’s history. The day begins with the chanting of “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee,” followed by recitations about DeGraffenried’s colony in New Bern, the Cary Rebellion, the death of John Lawson, early education in the region, and fishing in eastern North Carolina. The finale of the program is a performance of the tune ‘The Old North State.’

Today, residents and tourists alike commemorate National North Carolina Day at major attractions that serve barbecue.
