International Right-to-Know Day History

The way we think, reason, and express ourselves is influenced by our knowledge. Typically, we base our decisions on knowledge and facts. Since we live in an interdependent society, it is crucial that we are aware of what is going on around us so that we can take action for our safety and improvement. On International Right To Know Day, we recognize our right to seek and receive information.

Initiated by a UNESCO Conference in 2002, the day was subsequently adopted and expanded by numerous international civil societies, which observed it in 2012. International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) was formally proclaimed by the U.N. General Assembly in 2019 and is now observed annually on September 28.

International Right to Know Day was established due to the efforts of African civil societies that demanded disclosure. A citizen’s right to know would serve as a check on the actions and implementation of laws by the government. International Right To Know Day not only gives citizens the ability to actively participate in their country’s political system, but it also supports press freedom, making information dissemination easier. In Bulgaria, the Access to Information Program holds an annual awards ceremony to commemorate the importance of information access (AIP).
