Paediatrics has been performed since antiquity. Children’s healthcare-related medical research and treatises date back to the ancient Greeks and Byzantines. This did not become especially apparent until the late 17th century, however. During this time period, medical science advanced significantly and demonstrated that children’s maladies were distinct, necessitating a different approach to treatment.
Around the same time, other medical disciplines, such as haematology and oncology, emerged. The earliest academic antecedents of haematology as a distinct medical speciality emerged around the middle of the 17th century. As microscopes evolved and blood cell research progressed, haematological research became feasible and opened up new opportunities in medicine. The study of tumours in oncology dates back to the ancient Greek physician Galen. However, the term was not applied until the 17th century as a recognition of the origins of this study and as an indication of its development into a medical speciality with adequate research methodologies.
