National Pie Day 2024 (US): The American Pie Council (yes, there is such a thing!) sponsors National Pie Day, which gives us an excuse to indulge guiltlessly in one of our favorite desserts. Considering the occasion, it is a national holiday!

Although pies are present in various forms across the globe, the United States is indelibly linked to this light and airy delicacy. Our nation’s unwavering affection for the apple pie, as exemplified in Don McLean’s epic “American Pie” and expressions such as “as American as apple pie,” signifies our national pride.

Celebrate the simple, delectable pleasures of the excellent pie by preheating your oven or carrying a slice to your local bakery.

National Pie Day History

Pie, among the earliest documented foods, is referenced in recipes extending back to the time of the ancient Romans. The earliest documented pie recipe called for a goat cheese and honey pie crusted in rye. The Romans created a variety of pies with fruits, crustaceans, and meats, as well as placenta, a dense pie comparable in consistency to cheesecake. During lavish Roman banquets, the pie was incorporated into multiple courses.

Before recent times, pie crust primarily served as a conduit for the filling. In contrast to the decadent, buttery crusts of today, early pie crusts were frequently not consumed. By acting as a container, the crust prevented the flesh from burning and kept it moist.

When pies first appeared in England in the 12th century, they were predominantly composed of meat. The dubious origins of some pie fillings—such as the penny dreadful, which later served as the basis for “Sweeney Todd”—have inspired jokes and horror stories.

Pie accompanied the English settlers as they departed for the New World, including the Puritans. However, while delicious pumpkin pies and pecan pies are staples of the American Thanksgiving table, neither appeared at the alleged “First Thanksgiving” and gained popularity in the nineteenth century. Presently, sweet pies exhibit a significantly higher retail volume than savory pies, while pumpkin pie continues to be a staple at Thanksgiving.

National Pie Day, in contrast to National Pi Day, is entirely devoted to that confectionery American delicacy and has nothing to do with mathematics. National Pie Day, which Charlie Papazian ingeniously established on his birthday in the 1970s, encourages everyone to abstain from consuming the nation’s most popular delicacy.
