When is the 2023 National Root Beer Float Day?

On August 6, the effervescent beverage-dessert combination we all adore is celebrated as National Root Beer Float Day.

The background of National Root Beer Float Day

The combination of ice cream and root beer is unlike any other. The history of this summertime delicacy is as complex as its texture and flavour!

On August 19, 1893, the root beer float was invented by Frank J. Wisner, the proprietor of Colorado’s Cripple Creek Brewing. This extraordinary innovation was inspired by Wisner’s observation of the snowy peaks of Colorado’s Cow Mountain, which resembled ice cream hovering on a beverage. While gazing out the window of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company, Wisner perceived the snow-capped mountains to resemble ice cream due to the radiance of the full moon.

The next day, Wisner combined vanilla ice cream with root beer and dubbed the resulting beverage “Black Cow Mountain.” His beverage of choice was Myers Avenue Red Root Beer. The next day, he served his guests the root beer float, which became an instant success. Children shortened the name to ‘Black Cow,’ and it is now known simply as root beer float.
