History of National Sports Day 2023

India celebrates National Sports Day 2022 to commemorate Major Dhyan Chand’s birthday. Born in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on 29 August 1905, his initial name was Dhyan Singh. He joined the Indian Army in 1922 and retired as a Major in 1956. His exceptional hockey ability garnered him the moniker “Dhyan Chand,” because he practised under the moonlight.

Dhyan Chand, known as the “Hockey Wizard,” is regarded as one of the finest hockey players. His career in international hockey includes over 400 goals. India won consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936, a feat that had never been accomplished before.

In 1956, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honours. The death of Dhyan Chand occurred on December 3, 1979. After his death in 1979, the Indian Postal Department renamed Delhi’s National Stadium as the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in his honour.
