The aim of the day is to promote blood donation so that there is a sufficient amount of blood in times of need. To mark the day, various blood donation camps are arranged in various parts of India. People come forward and voluntarily donate blood on this day.

The day first began in the year 1975 and was first celebrated through the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology.  The day has made its own place and people look forward to this day to donate blood.
