The National Voters’ Day is observed on January 25 every year to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India in 1950. This day is meant to encourage, facilitate and maximize enrolment of new voters.

Voting is the central pillar of any functioning democracy and India, since its first general election in 1951, has adopted the principles of universal adult franchise.

Citizens vote once every five years to elect representatives to the national, state and local legislative bodies.

The main purpose of the National Voters’ Day celebration is to encourage, facilitate and maximize enrolment, especially for the new voters.

Dedicated to the voters of the country, the day is utilized to spread awareness among voters and for promoting informed participation in the electoral process.

New voters are felicitated and handed over their Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) at the National Voters’ Day functions.

The primary goal of the NVD celebration is to encourage, facilitate, and maximize enrolment, particularly among new voters.
