Nirbhaya case verdict: Supreme Court rejects review petition, confirms death penalty

A total of five men were convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case.

Completing the hearing of review petition, the Supreme Court on Wednesday announced its verdict rejecting the review petition of Akshay Kumar Singh, one of the four men convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case.

The newly constituted SC three-judge bench who heard the petition was headed by Justice R Banumathi and also comprised Justices Ashok Bhushan as AS Bopanna.

A total of five men were convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. One convict killed himself in Tihar while the remaining four convicts were sentenced death penalty. The other juvenile involved in the crime was sent to a correction facility for three years.

In 2017, the apex court upheld convictions of the four men involved in the case and confirmed the death penalty awarded to them.

In 2018, three of the four convicts, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh, filed a review petitions asking the top court to reconsider its 2017 decision which was dismissed.
