Most of Michigan University’s nine NBA players contribute to their teams.
Isaiah Livers and Jordan Poole of the Wizards, Moussa Diabate of the Clippers, Caleb Houston, Moritz Wagner, and Franz Wagner of Orlando, Caris Levert of Cleveland, and Duncan Robinson of Miami are active. Both are strong competitors, but their top performers went to different institutions. The NBA legends of tomorrow will still be alive today.
One must return to the 1970s and 1980s to relive the greatest Wolverines in NBA history. Chris Webber rules the NBA Wolverines.
Webber, the most successful 1991 Fab Five recruit, is remembered for requesting for a timeout in the waning seconds of the 1993 NCAA championship game that the Wolverines did not have.
He promptly joined the Golden State Warriors after the Orlando Magic drafted him first overall in 1993. He opted out of his contract and joined the Washington Bullets after winning NBA Rookie of the Year in 1994.
After excellent seasons with the Bullets, Kings, 76ers, and Pistons, he retired with the Warriors as a five-time All-Star, 1999 league rebounding champion, and one-time All-NBA First Team pick.
After Miami drafted him in 1989, Glen Rice from the same group played 15 NBA seasons. Rice had six seasons as a three-point specialist for Miami and Charlotte, averaging over 130.
After scoring over 18,000 points for the Lakers, Knicks, and Rockets, Rice retired with an NBA Championship ring and ASG MVP honors.
NBA Wolverine legends include Cazzie Russell, Rudy Tomjanovich, and Jalen Rose. They’re easy to spot. Who knows? We may reexamine certain current student-athletes with the same consideration.
