NSUI bags top post in MS University students' polls, ABVP draws blank

National Students Union of India (NSUI) candidates won the post of general secretary in the Maharaja Sayajirao University Students Union (MSUSU) elections. NSUI’s Vraj Patel won the post of university general secretary by bagging 6,727 votes. He defeated (Vidyarthi Vikas Parishad) VVS’s Harshal Chaudhary. The party was floated by NSUI rebels. Shockingly, the candidate of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) came a distant third.

ABVP’s Rahul Zinzala bagged just 1,222 votes, according to results announced yesterday. According to reports, a number of students opted for None of The Above (NOTA) than the ABVP in students’ elections for both posts- of university general secretary and vice president showing disenchantment towards the student wing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to reports, 39 per cent of students voted in the students’ election, 4 per cent more than the number of votes registered previous year. There is a total of 41,887 registered students at MS University who were eligible to vote. Out of this 16,490 exercised their voting rights in MSUSU polls. The elections started at 10 am and were held peacefully barring some incidents.

The vice president’s post, reserved for a woman candidate, was won by Saloni Mishra of the local student union Jai Ho which was floated by rebels of NSUI. The union was floated by former NSUI member Priyanka Patel who had won the UGS election in 2015. She had rebelled later and started her own group. The Jai Ho candidate defeated NSUI’s candidate Zeel Brahmbhatt by a margin of 665 votes while ABVP’s Anisha Mishra trailed behind with 1,285 votes.
