International Jugglers Day 2023: History, activities, facts and dates

International Jugglers Day 2023: Every year on April 18th, people all around the world celebrate International Juggler’s Day. This day is dedicated to celebrating the art of juggling as well as its many skilled practitioners. If you’re looking for a method to have fun with a variety of objects, you might want to think about picking up the skill of juggling them all. The most common and well-known style of juggling is called “toss juggling.”

Juggling can be performed with either one hand or several hands, and it can be done with either one item or multiple items at the same time. The objects that jugglers juggle are often referred to as “props” in the juggling community. There are a lot of different kinds of props, including rings, clubs, and balls. The most dramatic effects may be achieved by jugglers when they use chainsaws, knives, and flaming torches as their props.

HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL JUGGLERS DAY

The tombs of Beni Hassan, which belonged to the Middle Dynasty of the ancient Egyptian civilisation, included the very first depiction of juggling that is known to have existed. It was discovered that one of the murals inside the crypt contained pictures of ladies jugglers in addition to acrobats and dancers. Around the year 2000 B.C., the artwork was first made. Following the discovery of the tombs in Beni Hassan, there is a gap of almost 1,500 years before evidence of juggling is found again in Greek art.

After the end of the Middle Ages, juggling gradually began to reclaim its prior status. Pierre Gringoire, who lived from 1475 to 1538, was known across the world as the “King of Jugglers,” a title that was in no way derogatory. In 1528, the Emperor of Hindustan wrote in his chronicle about a band of jugglers performing with wooden rings. The jugglers were using these rings to do their tricks.

The tricks

Christoph Weiditz painted jugglers performing among the Aztecs of Mexico the same year. Around the year 1820, the brothers Mooty and Medua Samme made their first appearance in Europe. The Chinese devil sticks and oriental ball manipulation were used by these two Indian performers. Due to their immense popularity, artists from the “Far East” soon became all the rage.

There was a lot of miscommunication between Native Americans from the United States and Asian Indians. A significant number of Europeans added to the uncertainty by asserting that they were originally from China, Japan, or India. One such performer was Carl Rappo, a German entertainer who portrayed himself as an Indian and did strange manoeuvres and feats of strength with iron balls. Rappo was one of the pioneers of the iron ball act. One of the real Asian artists was the Burmese Moung-Toon, who performed using just his feet and received “excellent praise across Europe.”

He was considered to be one of the best. Awata Katsnoshin, a juggler who performed traditional Japanese ball and stick play and contributed to the development of modern ball manipulation, led the first authentic Japanese troupe to arrive in the West in the year 1870. This group was led by Awata Katsnoshin. International Jugglers Day was initially established in the middle of the 1980s by the International Jugglers’ Association (IJA).
