Son preference in India: A video shared by a gynaecologist from Uttar Pradesh has caused a big stir online. In the clip, a 22-year-old woman is seen as pregnant with her sixth child. The doctor said the woman and her husband were married when they were 15. The couple, who are originally from Rajasthan, already have five children. That includes four daughters and one son. The video was shared by Dr Pragya Tomar of Spandan Hospital, and she said it was posted with the consent of both the patient and her husband.

The story spread fast because the couple said they still wanted another son. In the video, the woman told the doctor, “I keep having girls… we have one boy, we need another boy.” Her husband also backed this idea and said one son was “not enough” for the family line. Those words quickly got people talking about son preference and the pressure some women still face in families.
Doctor warns about the danger
Dr Tomar did not stay quiet about the medical side of the case. She warned the couple that repeated pregnancies at such a young age can be very harmful. The woman had already been feeling breathless, dizzy and in pain. The doctor linked these signs to tiredness, anaemia and poor nutrition from back-to-back childbirths. She told the patient, “You’re risking your life with so many pregnancies,” and said that not getting enough recovery time could hurt both the mother and the unborn child.
The concern here is not only about one pregnancy. It is also about the age of the mother and how closely the children were born. Medical experts often warn that repeated pregnancies in a short time can raise the risk of weakness, blood loss, malnutrition and other problems. The NDTV report on the case also noted that the child count and the young age of the mother made the situation especially worrying.

Once the video spread, many people on social media reacted strongly. A lot of users said they felt sad for the woman and upset about the pressure on women to bear sons. Others pointed to bigger issues like early marriage, poor awareness about contraception and weak family planning education.
Some of the comments shared online were blunt. One user wrote, “She became a mother before becoming an adult,” while another said, “Look at the husband’s face and condition, and he says to his wife that she doesn’t wanna continue his lineage. Why do you even want to continue it when you yourself are unable to afford food, shelter and clothing and many more things for the family?” Another comment added, “She’s really 22???? Damn this is so cruel,” and one more said, “A child raising children.”
