OpenAI GPT-5.6 Release: The United States government has cleared the broader public release of OpenAI’s latest flagship artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.6, ending a weeks-long delay that had restricted access due to national security concerns. The company is now expected to begin the wider rollout on Thursday, following additional government reviews and testing under Washington’s emerging oversight framework for advanced AI systems.

The ChatGPT owner will launch its most capable GPT-5.6 Sol, along with the lower-cost Terra and Luna models, it said in an X post late on Tuesday.
According to Reuters and Axios, US officials were concerned that frontier AI systems could be exploited for sophisticated cyber operations, biological research or military and intelligence applications by hostile foreign actors, including those linked to China and Russia. The temporary restrictions were part of a broader government effort to establish a repeatable review process for highly capable AI models before they are released publicly.
Government Lifts Restrictions After Additional Testing
Following several weeks of testing and consultations with federal authorities, the US Department of Commerce approved a wider deployment of GPT-5.6. U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing a voluntary framework under which AI developers could provide “covered frontier models” to the U.S. government for up to 30 days before releasing them to trusted partners.
Reports indicate that the company had previously shared access only with approved partners whose participation was disclosed to government officials as part of the temporary oversight arrangement. OpenAI had also stated that while it was cooperating with authorities, it did not believe such government-controlled access should become the long-term standard for releasing advanced AI systems.
