Sofia Coppola Fairyland: Sofia Coppola’s Fairyland will release in cinemas on October 10. Andrew Durham wrote, directed, and produced the movie, and Sofia Coppola is one of the producers. Variety says it is based on the much-loved memoir by Alysia Abbott. The story follows the life of a father and daughter in San Francisco during the 1970s and 1980s. It shows their journey through a colourful, free-spirited time and into the painful years of the AIDS crisis.

The cast includes Emilia Jones, Scoot McNairy, Cody Fern, Maria Bakalova, and Bella Murphy. Adam Lambert and Geena Davis also appear, and the film introduces young actress Nessa Dougherty. The film has already been praised after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It was also shown at Biarritz, Palm Springs, and Frameline, where it opened the festival.

Amelia McPartlon Rogers from Lionsgate called Fairyland “a beautiful and deeply personal film” that touched her emotionally. She said it was an honour to keep working with American Zoetrope and Sofia Coppola. She described it as a sharp, funny, and moving look at identity, resilience, and coming of age that will “leave audiences spellbound.”

Durham said he felt inspired when he first read Abbott’s memoir. He loved how it showed a father-daughter bond in a way that felt unique but also relatable for many families. He admitted that making films with unusual stories is often hard, but the constant support from Coppola, American Zoetrope, and the talented cast and crew made it possible. Lionsgate and WILLA also backed the film strongly.

Coppola shared that she was deeply moved by Abbott’s memoir and how Durham brought it to the screen. She felt the story was important to share right now. She said she was proud to help highlight all kinds of families, staying true to oneself, and what her generation went through.

Elizabeth Woodward, CEO of WILLA, praised Durham for creating a film that tackles important social issues with authenticity and emotion. She said WILLA is excited to work with Lionsgate on distributing the film and creating a special campaign to connect with audiences, reported Mint.
