Over 70 lost lives due to heavy rain; red alert issued in UP, Bihar

More than 70 people have lost their lives since Friday in different parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh due to heavy rainfall.

More than 70 people have lost their lives since Friday in different parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh due to heavy rainfall. The state govt has sounded red alert in most eastern UP districts which has disrupted normal life, affecting rail traffic, healthcare facilities and schools.

In Bihar, several lives were affected in Patna after heavy downpour since Friday. The situation triggered major traffic jams and water-logging in many parts. Water-logging of the railway tracks affected the prepare visitors in Bihar.

On Saturday, a meeting was called by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with the officials, via video conferencing, to review the situation. The Patna district administration has ordered closure of all faculties until Tuesday.

In Uttar Pradesh, Prayagraj received 102.2 mm of rain, and 84.2 mm of rain was recorded in Varanasi – both higher than normal figures. The weather department also predicted “heavy rainfall at isolated places over east Uttar Pradesh” on Sunday.

Chief Minister Adityanath on Friday asked district magistrates of the state to inspect areas hit by floods. He also ordered a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
