COVID Impact: International flights to remain suspended till Nov 30

In a dramatic escalation of regional tensions, Pakistan has issued a nationwide NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), closing its entire airspace to all civilian and military traffic until further notice. The move follows India’s retaliatory precision strikes on terrorist launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), conducted in response to a terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists.

The NOTAM, identified as A0320/25, was filed at 2215 UTC on May 9, and is effective until 0700 UTC on May 10, 2025, covering all altitudes and flight information regions (Karachi and Lahore FIRs).

“PAKISTAN AIRSPACE WILL REMAIN CLSD FOR ALL TYPE OF TFC (Traffic),”
— reads the official directive, with no stated reason.

Background: Drone Attacks and Escalating Skirmishes

The airspace shutdown came hours after India accused Pakistan of using civilian air corridors as shields for drone attacks that have targeted Indian border cities over the past three days. India claims it has successfully intercepted these drones, which reportedly aimed to hit strategic locations including air bases and civilian airports.

Officials in New Delhi assert that Islamabad is attempting to avoid direct engagement by hiding military movement within civilian air traffic patterns.

Impact on Aviation and Geopolitics

  • Major international flight diversions are already underway, especially for routes connecting Europe, South Asia, and the Middle East.

  • Delays and cancellations are expected for flights over Pakistan’s airspace, severely affecting commercial aviation.

  • Regional airlines and global carriers are issuing advisories and rerouting flights.

Experts warn that the closure suggests a rapidly deteriorating security scenario, with potential military escalation on the horizon.

India’s Counter-Strike

Wednesday’s Indian strikes targeted terror infrastructure inside Pakistan and PoK, described by officials as a “measured and necessary response” to Islamabad’s “continued support for cross-border terrorism.”

With both nations now on high alert and airspace movements restricted, diplomatic backchannels may be the only way to de-escalate, even as public sentiment hardens on both sides.
