Sir Paul McCartney was born into a middle-class family in Liverpool. James McCartney was a volunteer firefighter during World War II, but military duty prevented him from attending his son’s birth. His father worked as a salesman for the cotton merchants A.Hannay & Co. after the war. McCartney’s mother, Mary Patricia, was a nurse. His brothers and sisters are Peter and Ruth. From 1947 to 1949, McCartney attended Stockton Wood Road Primary School until it became too congested. He subsequently transferred to Joseph Williams Junior School and completed his education at Liverpool Institute.

At the age of 14, McCartney’s father gave him a trumpet, which he subsequently exchanged for an acoustic guitar.
