Prince Philip Biography

Early Years

Philip Mountbatten was born to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice in Corfu, Greece. Philip attended Gordonstoun residential school before enrolling at the Royal Naval College. As a student, he captained the cricket and hockey teams and participated in charity cricket for the National Playing Fields Association. From 1940 until the end of World War II, he served in the Royal Navy.

Career

In 1947, he abdicated his claims to the thrones of Greece and Denmark and went on to marry Queen Elizabeth. On the eve of his marriage, he was named Knight of the Garter, Baron Greenwich, Earl of Merioneth, and Duke of Edinburgh. He remained in the Royal Navy and was appointed a Knight of the Thistle in 1952. He obtained his RAF wings, helicopter wings and private pilot’s licence later on. In 1957, he was named Prince of the United Kingdom, and in 1988, he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia. He occupies the 496th place in the line of succession to the British throne. Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Prince Charles, and Prince Andrew were his four offspring with Queen Elizabeth. Later, great-grandchildren were welcomed into the family circle, resulting in an expansion.
