On Wednesday with Priyanka Gandhi’s appointment as AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East, Gandhi-Nehru family has now seen 12 family members joining politics. 3 of which have got elected to the prestigious post of Prime Minister. 

Going back in history to Motilal Nehru, first in the bloodline to be involved in active politics, we trace all the members of the family who have tried their hands at politics.

Motilal Nehru

First in the lineage, Motilal was a barrister who became a popular Indian National Congress, Presiding over sessions twice, in 1919-1920 and 1928-1929. He was the son of Gangadhar Nehru, the last kotwal of Delhi.

Jawaharlal Nehru

Son of barrister and politician Motilal Nehru, became the first Prime Minister of Independent India. He played key role in Indian politics and was central figure in the country’s freedom struggle.

Indira Gandhi

Daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi became the first woman Prime Minister of the country. Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi served as the Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms and died before completing her fourth term. She was instrumental in taking crucial decisions, like nationalisation of the banks.

Feroze Gandhi

The publisher of The National Herald, Feroze Gandhi became a member of the provincial parliament (1950-1952), before winning in the first General Elections from Rae Bareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He was the husband of Indira Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi

The eldest son Indira and Feroze Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi went on to become the 6th Prime Minister of the country following the death of mother Indira Gandhi.

Sanjay Gandhi

Younger brother of Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay was thought to follow the steps of his mother. But due to early death in the plane crash, the responsibility got forwarded the Rajiv Gandhi.

Arun Nehru

Arun Kumar Nehru was great grandson of Nandlal Nehru, elder brother of Motilal Nehru. He won in the 7th(Rae Barelli), 8th (Rae Barelli) on Congress ticket and 9th(Bilhaur) Lok Sabha elections as a Janta Dal candidate.

Maneka Gandhi

The daughter-in-law of Feroze and Indira Gandhi, Maneka Gandhi started her political career contesting the 1984 Lok Seat of Amethi against Rajiv Gandhi but she was overwhelmingly defeat. Daughter of Indian Army officer Lt. Col. Tarlochan Singh Anand, Gandhi. Maneka went on to contest elections on Janata Dal and then BJP ticket. She is currently an MP from Pilibhit constituency and is the Indian Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development under the Modi regime.

Sonia Gandhi

Wife of Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia first contested Lok Sabha Elections in 1999 from Amethi, the constituency of her husband. Gandhi registered a resounding victory of over 3 lakh votes against the incumbent BJP MP Sanjay Singh. She is currently the Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance and is an MP from Rae Bareli for three terms.

Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi is the current Congress Chief, taking the post in December 2017. He is the son of Sonia Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. And is among the names for the post of Prime Ministers in Lok Sabha Elections of 2019. After Sanjay, Rajiv and Sonia, Rahul became the fourth member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to become an MP from Amethi. Rahul has been an MP here since 2004. In 2014 he defeated BJP hope Smriti Irani with over 1 lac votes.

Varun Gandhi

Son of Sanjay Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi, Varun followed Maneka’s way and became a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party. In 2013, With Rajnath Singh appointing him as general secretary of BJP, he became the youngest to get the post.

Priyanka Gandhi

Daughter of Rajiv and Sonia, it remains to be seen what she achieves. Going by the twitter trends, it won’t be a stretch to say, Priyanka has announced her arrival!
